This article presents the results of an investigation aimed at evaluating the existence of a relationship between variations in academic performance in Portuguese and Mathematics based on the average proficiency of students in the Prova Brasil, and the confidence and leadership indices of the school principal. The data used in the study was collected from six state public schools including students from the 5th and 9th grades of elementary school and students from the 3rd and 4th grades of secondary school. The statistical analysis carried out confirmed the hypothesis that variations in the two indices are related to variations in students’ academic performance, both in Portuguese and Mathematics, in the schools investigated.
