About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Estudos em Avaliação Educacional is a continuous publication journal of Fundação Carlos Chagas (FCC). Created in 1990, the journal aims to disseminate scholarly output related to educational evaluation and to the analysis of policies and programs interrelated with evaluation and/or which may inform evaluative studies, welcoming works in various humanities fields and with diverse theoretical-methodological approaches, enabling the exchange of information and the academic debate.

It publishes unpublished works, presented in the form of:

- Scientific article: it is the product of scientific investigation work, possessing well-grounded and methodically developed argumentation. An article fundamentally comprises the following parts: introduction, development and conclusions. The introduction contextualizes the problem, presents the approach used to study it, the goals and relevance of the study. The development presents literature review, methodology, theoretical discussion and results demonstration. The demonstration of results analyzes the phenomenon in light of the theoretical perspective adopted, presenting explanatory or demonstrative arguments. And the conclusions summarize the whole argumentative effort employed, returning to the hypotheses and analyzing results in relation to the objectives initially proposed in the text.

- Experience report: it should have the structure of a scientific article, describing and indicating the relevance of the reported phenomenon, the goals, the theoretical framework used to analyze the experience, the methodological procedures utilized and the context in which the experience was developed.

- Theoretical-methodological essay: an argumentative text presenting the author’s reflections and critiques. It requires an intellectual effort which demonstrates broad theoretical knowledge, mastery of the approached subject, and which presents original conclusions, which also contribute to advance the discussion in the field of educational evaluation.

- Review: it comprehends the analysis of a newly released book, carried out through an argumentative and summarized text that presents the work’s main ideas and relevance to the field of educational evaluation. It is expected that a review possesses critical and well-grounded arguments.

Occasionally, the journal publishes interviews proposed and arranged by the Editorial Committee or by specialists and researchers of the field. Exceptionally, papers already published in foreign journals will be accepted when they provide a relevant contribution to the field.

For the verification of similarity, Estudos em Avaliação Educacional adopts the Crossref Similarity Check program, a system that operates in the iThenticate tool, to check for plagiarism or anti-plagiarism.

The journal is committed to good scientific practice. Therefore, it follows the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) regarding studies with human beings, informing authors and referees about conflicts of interest, peer review process, plagiarism and self-plagiarism and procedures for dealing with misconduct.

Estudos em Avaliação Educacional publishes texts in Portuguese and Spanish, in online version, at the FCC Publications Portal, as well as in various indexing databases. Works submitted in other languages are translated into Portuguese and the original article is also available. English versions of articles chosen by the Editorial Committee are published.

Accepted manuscripts undergo editorial and statistical review and are posted as soon as they are approved and edited by the editorial team of Fundação Carlos Chagas. The journal is published only online.

Peer Review Process

The received manuscripts go through four stages:

1)      Submission to plagiarism and self-plagiarism control software: the objective is to verify the originality of the text.

2)      Prior evaluation by the Editorial Committee: the Committee judges the adequacy of the texts to the editorial line of the journal; to the publication norms established by it; and the quality of the work, i.e., its publication potential.

3)      Double-blind process: if the texts pass this initial screening, they will be forwarded to be evaluated for merit by specialists in the field.

4)      Final decision: the evaluations issued will be analyzed by the Editorial Committee, which will give a final decision issuing a consolidated evaluation.

Estudos em Avaliação Educacional adopts the double-anonymized system for peer review of manuscripts, preserving the author's identity in relation to the reviewer and vice versa. The evaluation involves at least two ad hoc reviewers. Occasionally, the Editorial Committee may appoint one of the editors for evaluating the submitted manuscript.

If the first version of the text has been published in a preprint repository, this fact should be included in the submission’s metadata. In such cases, the evaluation will be carried out as follows:

Single-anonymized: the reviewer knows the text’s authorship, but the author has no access to the reviewer’s identity.

In the consolidated evaluation, issued by the Editorial Committee, the authors will receive a communication stating whether their text has been accepted, rejected or if it needs alterations for publication. In this last case, the reformulated article is submitted to a new evaluation round. The Editorial Committee reserves the right to refuse articles whose modifications do not satisfy the referred requests.

Submissions in the form of Interviews, Experience Reports and Reviews are evaluated by the Editorial Committee, which will decide on the relevance of their publication according to the objectives of each section and demands of the journal.

The average time required to evaluate manuscripts is approximately eight months. Once the article has been approved, a period of two months is estimated for the editing (revision, translation and layout) and publication.

Guidelines for Reviewers

The specialists must write their evaluation, in a detailed way, considering the following criteria:

1)      Relevance of the topic to the study area.

2)      Interrelation with the already produced knowledge on the subject.

3)      Relevance and timeliness of the bibliographic references.

4)      Clarity in the presentation of the object of study, objectives and justification.

5)      Rigor in the use of concepts.

6)      Theoretical-methodological consistency.

7)      Pertinence, clarity and justification of the methodology used.

8)      Adequacy, justification and argumentative solidity of the analysis.

9)      Good structuring of the text, with clear articulation between the ideas.

At the end of the evaluation, the reviewer has the possibility to choose one of the following options offered by the journal's electronic management system:

  • Accept
  • Mandatory corrections
  • Submit again for evaluation
  • Submit to another journal
  • Reject
  • View comments

The option “Mandatory corrections” should be used in situations where the manuscript has an effective publication potential. In the case of texts that require significant modifications, their rejection is indicated. The option “Submit again for evaluation” should be used when the reviewer considers it necessary to forward to another specialist. The option “View comments” should only be used when the reviewer is in doubt about their decision.

In the last issue of each volume, a complete list is published with the names of all reviewers who have collaborated with the journal throughout the year.
