This article aims to understand the emergence of professional doctorates (PDs) in the English-speaking world and their expansion at the international level. Methodologically, the study consists of an exploratory analysis that resulted in an analytical-descriptive work in the field of comparative education. Although PDs originated in the Anglo-Saxon world, their expansion has been limited in Latin America, Africa, and the Iberian region, while significant growth has occurred in Asian countries. In Europe, PDs face diverse contexts, encountering resistance while seeking a balance between tradition and innovation. With the expansion of PDs, these programs have been classified as “in-service” programs; they confer the doctoral degree with a focus on professional development aimed at enhancing skills related to professional practice.
