This article examines the challenges and socialization process of new school principals in São Paulo. The method consisted of carrying out 4 case studies and analyzing 75 responses to a questionnaire. The challenges and experiences of the first year, the socialization process and professional development needs were assessed. The results point to a challenging process, with informal socialization and limited institutional support. The lack of prior training and absence of support during the transition to school leadership stand out. The primary source of support comes from interactions with other school principals, in addition to the gradual assistance provided by the school team. Similarities with national and international studies are underscored, along with the importance of an integral approach to school management.
