Abstract

Esse artigo procura mostrar como os costumes e as idéias a respeito da sexualidade infantil variaram ao longo do tempo e nas diferentes sociedades. Argumenta que Freud, ao mesmo tempo que foi um inovador radical, não conseguiu fugir à influência da cultura repressiva da qual fazia parte, implicitamente justificando muitas de suas práticas. Apresenta dados coletados recentemente em São Paulo sobre práticas repressivas em famílias de baixa renda. Conclui que qualquer esforço teórico de compreensão das raízes da repressão da sexualidade infantil deve considerá-la também naquilo que representa de potencialidade de desenvolvimento da sexualidade adulta e deve colocá-la no contexto das demais práticas educacionais utilizadas em determinado tipo de estrutura familiar, situada em uma dada estrutura social.
