Abstract

O artigo baseia-se em estudo realizado com adultos moradores de uma favela na cidade de São Paulo, com o objetivo de obter dados descritivos sobre processos de raciocínio e de solução de problemas em situações de vida cotidiana e sobre as relações entre esses processos e o desempenho em testes de inteligência e em situações escolares. Os dados obtidos mostraram a ação recíproca de dois aspectos complementares das capacidades cognitivas: a diferença no desempenho médio de diferentes grupos sociais e as diferenças individuais existentes no interior de grupos sociais homogêneos.
